Circularity

Reimagining how materials are used to enhance the circular economy.

Increasing population and the need for housing and infrastructure contribute to higher year-on-year demand for finite resources. If materials use continues to grow at the current rate we will need over two planets’ worth of resources by 2040.

Roadstones commitment
Roadstone is committing to meet the challenges of tomorrow by:
  • Being a leader in recycling by integrating large amounts of by products and green materials into our products and processes.
  • Delivering Circular Solutions that are longer lasting, have higher recycled content, and can be reused, repaired, and recycled.
  • Innovating New Technologies by collaborating and applying our expertise in material science, design, and engineering.
  • Using Resources efficiently by preserving finite natural resources and extending the life of our reserves
Ambitions

Continually driving to embed circularity within our business, CRH has set a target for 95% of all operating companies to have waste recycling programs by 2030, including both process (non-hazardous and hazardous) and business waste. This is an opportunity for Roadstone to put initiatives in place to prevent, reuse, recover, or recycle waste.

Collaboration

Roadstone's collaborative approach with specifiers, designers and contractors has contributed to the increased use of circular materials in the construction industry of today.  Work on projects such as the use of RAP, UGM materials containing recycled aggregates and 3-D printed concrete has placed us at the forefront of innovation in our industry.

Asphalt is 100% recyclable material and plays an important role in the continued decarbonisation of the asphalt production process. Major investment in the operating plant has allowed Roadstone to produce mixed material at 70% RAP addition in base and binder mixes. Continued research and development into using warm-mixes and bio-binder innovation remain key drivers in the search for circular solutions.

Circular Water Solutions

Water is recognised as one of Earth's most valuable resources so here in Roadstone we appreciate the importance of using onsite and recycled water within our production processes. Roadstone offers a large range of products that combine innovative engineering with sustainable solutions in the management, processing and treatment of water. The existing SuDS paving range provides options for managing groundwater, while the additional filter range from Hydro will deal with water underground, control its flow and manage filtration.

Solutions and Innovations

Urban Quarry: An urban quarry is a recycling facility that takes in soil and stone as well as construction and demolition (C&D) material, such as concrete and brick. Through crushing, screening and washing processes, the urban quarry creates quality construction materials such as coarse and fine aggregates for use in downstream products such as concrete, concrete blocks and stonefill.

These facilities provide a circular solution by reducing the need for new quarrying thus reducing carbon emissions and helps preserve valuable natural resources. It also reduces the need to import materials long distances to supplying local infrastructure projects with recycled materials thereby supporting economic efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The urban quarry supports a circular economy by creating a closed-loop system where materials are repurposed and reused, supporting a more sustainable construction sector.

How we are going to get to where we want to be?

Examine all our processes to determine if we are aligned with CRH Sustainability and Circularity strategies. Use Green Deal principles to drive the business forward.
Extend the life of products by using them again, without significant alteration, either for the same purpose or a new one.
Process materials to make new products, preserving natural resources. Recycling should be the final resort after all other Rs have been exhausted.
Give products a new function or use to extend their lifecycle and prevent waste. Can we deconstruct to reconstruct?
Minimise resource/natural reserve use and waste generation. This includes using fewer materials, energy and water in production and consumption.

Avoid unnecessary use of resources. Say no to products that are harmful to the environment or not designed for longevity, reuse and recycling.
Challenge existing processing models and traditions. Consider alternative ways to design, produce and consume that reduce waste and improve sustainability.
It is our responsibility to protect natural resources like air, water and land for the well-being of current and future generations to come.

Vision

Roadstone is committed to a circular approach to optimise the use of resources and minimise waste.

This is reflected in the integration of social and environmental challenges and opportunities relating to our activities, as well as our relations with stakeholders (employees, suppliers, customers, local and regional authorities).
