N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge Road
The N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge Road scheme required a reliable and low-maintenance flow control solution to manage stormwater from multiple attenuation ponds. Roadstone supported the stormwater attenuation design by supplying bespoke Hydro-Brake® flow control units for 11 attenuation ponds. The solution helped achieve controlled discharge rates while reducing blockage risk and optimising pond volumes across the route.
Design flow control devices for 11 attenuation ponds along new N5 route, while:
- Minimising attenuation volume requirements in each pond.
- Ensuring blockage risks were minimised.
For this section of the stormwater attenuation scheme, Hydro-Brakes (vortex flow controls) were preferred over conventional orifice plates for the specified discharge rates. The main advantage was that they achieved the same flow restrictions through vortex actions rather than very small openings.
The larger opening sizes of the Hydro-Brakes provided the same discharge rate as the equivalent orifice plates, therefore significantly reducing blockage risks.
The Hydro-Brakes also permitted the volume reduction of the various required attenuation ponds because discharge remains closer to the target rate over a wider head range.
Hydro-Brakes are of a robust and bespoke design, with no moving parts, self-activating, and very low maintenance. They are future-proofed by design with adjustable inlets which can accommodate future flow changes.
